Julen Lopetegui Sacked by Real Madrid

Soccer player celebrates
Julen Lopetegui has been sacked as manager of Real Madrid after just four and a half months.

The former Spain national team coach succeeded Zinedine Zidane at the Bernabeu in June but has overseen a poor run of results in recent weeks.

Sunday’s 5-1 loss at the hands of Barcelona in the El Clasico was Madrid’s fifth defeat in six league games – a winless run that stretches back to September 22.

Los Blancos currently sit ninth in the La Liga table after their worst start since 2001-02.

Former player and B-team coach Santiago Solari will take charge of the team in the interim.

Lopetegui’s fate was decided during a board meeting on Monday.
Announcing the decision, a club statement said: “This decision aims to change the dynamics of the first team, when all the objectives of this season are still achievable.

“The Board of Directors understands that there is great disproportion between the quality of the staff of Real Madrid and the results obtained to date.

“The club thanks Julen Lopetegui and all his technical team for their effort and work and wishes them the best in their professional career.”

It marks the second time the 52-year old has been sacked in the last five months after he was fired by Spain just two days before the World Cup when news of his planned post-competition move to Madrid became public.
