Kgaswane Brace downs Cape Town City

Mamelodi Sundowns v SuperSport United Preview

Two quality goals from Mpho Kgaswane handed Baroka a smash-and-grab 2-0 win over Cape Town City at the New Peter Mokaba Stadium on Tuesday.

The Citizens were made to pay for their wastefulness after dominating proceedings in Polokwane and creating the majority of the chances, but sweet strikes in each half from Mpho Kgaswane secured all three points for Macdonald Makhubedu’s side.

City hadn’t managed to score in the opening 15 minutes of a Premiership match this season, but that almost changed when Judas Mosemaedi hit the woodwork after just two minutes.

Thamsanqa Mkhize sent the striker through on goal with a ball over the top that bounced over the head of Abdi Banda, but he could only hit the left post on the stretch.

Benni McCarthy’s men did well to restrict Baroka, who were mostly left to shooting from range, as Mduduzi Mdatsane did on 17 minutes, although his effort sailed high over the crossbar.

Lyle Lakay threatened for the Citizens moments later as he connected with Mosemaedi’s cut-back from the right, but his first-time shot from 18 yards out was deflected wide of the goal.

Ayanda Dlamini had to be alert on 26 minutes as he got a glove on the ball after Lakay’s strike from outside the box was diverted goalward by Mosemaedi, while Thabo Nodada volleyed wide of the left post from 20 yards out soon afterwards when he collected a clearance from a free-kick.

Mosemaedi wasted a good chance on 33 minutes when Lakay released him through on goal with a neat first-time pass. The striker advanced into the box from the left but fired wide of the near post from 16 yards out.

However, a defensive mistake handed the hosts the lead two minutes later, with clever free-kick routine from Kgaswane creating a gap in the wall and he lashed the ball past Shu-Aib Walters inside the right post.

Gift Motupa failed to test Walters in first-half stoppage time as he skied an effort from 16 yards out after connecting with a cut-back pass from the right.

Craig Martin should have equalised four minutes into the second half when Lakay picked him out inside the box with a dangerous cross from the left, but he steered the ball wide of the right post from eight yards out.

Kgaswane had another pop from range on 61 minutes after he was allowed to advance on goal from the halfway line, but he dragged a shot wide of the right post from 22 yards out.

Mosemaedi missed the target again under pressure from a defender at the near post when he got on the end of Lakay’s cross from the left 12 minutes later, while substitute Shane Roberts also failed to work Dlamini with a first-time strike that flew well wide of the left post from Mkhize’s cut-back on the right.

After Mosemaedi glanced a header wide of the far post from Ebrahim Seedat’s fine cross from the left three minutes from time, Baroka hit the visitors on the counter in the final minute to seal victory.

Talent Chawapiwa carried the ball down the left flank after picking up a loose pass in his own half and his square pass was dummied by Mdatsane, which allowed Kgaswane to fire home from 25 yards out.
