Barcelona’s sporting director Deco has successfully secured contract renewals for both Ronald Araujo and Pedri, extending their commitments to the club.
The agreements are now in place, with only the formal signatures pending, expected to be announced before the transfer window closes on February 3.
Deco confirmed his focus on player renewals before the match against Benfica, stating, “Right now, the priority is the renewals to ensure Financial Fair Play compliance and to see if we can create enough room in the wage bill for new signings.”
Marcus Rashford has been highlighted as the prime candidate to bolster Barcelona’s forward line.
The negotiations with Araujo were notably expedited after the defender considered a switch to Juventus during the winter transfer window. The Italian club’s offer of 35 million euros was deemed insufficient by Barcelona, who value the Uruguayan at a figure closer to 70 or 80 million euros.
Deco met with Araujo’s representatives in Barcelona, advancing the renewal talks significantly. However, there remains uncertainty about Araujo’s future if another lucrative offer arrives in the summer transfer window.
On the other hand, discussions with Pedri have been calm and constructive.
Both parties have always aimed for continuity, with the only hurdle being the financial terms which took some time to agree upon but proceeded without any major hitches.
Deco emphasized the strategic importance of securing Pedri, who has been delivering stellar performances this season.
In addition to Araujo and Pedri, renewals for Gavi and Gerard Martin are also nearly finalized. These negotiations have been similarly straightforward, with agreements anticipated to be announced before the transfer deadline.
The question now is whether these renewals will provide enough Financial Fair Play leeway for new acquisitions. If not, Barcelona might have to consider offloading players like Ansu Fati or Eric Garcia, who have seen limited action under coach Hansi Flick.
