Real Madrid have received a welcome boost in their defensive ranks as David Alaba's recovery from a long-term knee injury has progressed faster than expected.

The 31-year-old Austrian defender, sidelined since December 2023 with a torn ACL, has made remarkable strides in recent weeks.

Alaba began light running in mid-October and, more recently, returned to full training, wearing boots and working with the ball, a positive sign for manager Carlo Ancelotti, who has been grappling with defensive shortages.

Although Alaba’s return to full fitness remains a few months away, reports suggest he could be back in action by early January.

This would be a timely boost, coinciding with the opening of the winter transfer window, offering Real Madrid a defensive reinforcement without needing to buy a player.

The setback in May, which led to a second surgery, had cast doubt on Alaba’s return, but the recent developments have offered fresh hope.

Ancelotti had previously commented on the importance of Alaba’s recovery, stating, “We need the right player for Real Madrid, but it’s not easy. We have young players who can contribute, and the return of Alaba, who will soon be with the team, is a big plus.”

With other injuries to key defenders, such as Dani Carvajal and Aurelien Tchouameni, the sight of Alaba back on the pitch is a much-needed ray of hope for a squad already stretched thin. His potential return will be crucial as Madrid navigate a challenging period in their season.

Madrid are back in La Liga action when they welcome Osasuna at Santiago Bernabéu on Saturday at 15:00, South African time.

The Los Blancos are second on the log table with 24 points from 11 matches. They trail rivals Barcelona by nine points but the log leaders have played one more match. Barca travel to Real Sociedad on Sunday at 22:00.
