Former Real Madrid and Germany international Toni Kroos has identified FC Barcelona midfielder Pedri as the club’s most vital player.
Speaking on his podcast Einfach mal Luppen, Kroos praised the 22-year-old Spaniard, calling him the best midfielder in world football at present and a central figure in the Blaugrana’s resurgence under manager Hansi Flick.
“For me, a player like Pedri is more important than Lamine Yamal, Raphinha, or Lewandowski,” Kroos remarked. “They may be the ones to decide the outcome of matches, but Pedri makes those moments possible. He is currently the best player in the world in his position.”
Barca’s attacking trio of Yamal, Lewandowski, and Raphinha have collectively registered 86 goals across all competitions this season. However, Kroos argued that Pedri’s influence extends beyond statistical contributions.
“He is a player whose absence is immediately felt, regardless of the opponent,” Kroos continued. “He not only contributes goals and assists – he provides solutions throughout the game. His intelligence and versatility elevate the entire team.”
After struggling with injuries in recent seasons, Pedri appears to have regained both form and fitness. He has made 54 appearances so far this season, scoring six goals and assisting seven, and is once again central to Barcelona’s tactical identity.
Kroos further emphasised Pedri’s performances on the continental stage: “In the Champions League, he consistently outplays his direct opponents. In LaLiga, the gulf in class is often even more pronounced.”
Barcelona face a crucial week in their campaign, with a trip to Inter Milan for the second leg of their Champions League semifinal, following a 3-3 draw at home-before taking on Real Madrid in a potentially title-deciding Clasico. The Catalan side currently holds a four-point lead in the league standings.
Kroos, who retired last summer after a distinguished club and international career, also reflected on his personal experience playing against Pedri in El Clasico encounters.
“I remember one match in particular where he completely dominated us,” he said. “He does not appear especially quick, but his dribbling and decision-making are elite. I tried to close him down, even commit tactical fouls – but I couldn’t stop him.”
While Kroos was part of multiple title-winning Real Madrid sides, his comments convey deep respect for a player he sees not merely as talented, but as tactically indispensable.
With both domestic and European honours still within reach, Barcelona will be relying heavily on Pedri’s composure, creativity, and consistency in what could prove to be a defining phase of their season.
