Barcelona’s rising star Lamine Yamal has dismissed criticism of his post-match comments following Saturday’s Copa del Rey final.
Yamal, who played a pivotal role in Barcelona’s 3-2 extra-time victory over their Clasico rivals, provided two assists in a performance that further solidified his reputation as one of Europe’s brightest young talents. Speaking at a pre-match press conference on Tuesday, the 17-year-old addressed those who accused him of arrogance after he declared Madrid “can’t handle” Barcelona this season.
“While I’m winning, they can’t say anything,” Yamal stated. “When they beat me, they can.”
His remarks come after Barcelona’s third consecutive win over Madrid this season, following a 4-0 triumph at the Santiago Bernabéu in October and a 5-2 win in the Spanish Supercopa final in January.
Yamal’s comments precede a significant milestone in his burgeoning career. He prepares to make his 100th appearance for the club in Wednesday’s Uefa Champions League semifinal first leg against Inter Milan. Despite his age, the Spain international has amassed 14 goals and 24 assists this season and continues to play with the composure and maturity of a seasoned professional.
When asked whether the magnitude of matches such as the upcoming Champions League tie affects him, Yamal was candid: “I don’t have fear, but I do feel the motivation and butterflies before a big game. I think that’s a good thing. Any fear, I left behind in the park in Mataró a long time ago.”
Yamal also rejected frequent comparisons to Lionel Messi, who similarly emerged as a generational talent from La Masia.
“I don’t compare myself with anyone, especially not with (Messi),” he said. “I admire him as the best player ever, but I try to follow my own path.”
Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick acknowledged the challenge posed by Inter, despite the Italian club’s recent poor form, including three straight defeats across all competitions. Flick emphasized the importance of focus and resilience as his team seeks a first Champions League final appearance since 2015.
“Everyone is concentrated and aware of what’s at stake,” Flick said. “The win against Real Madrid has boosted morale, but we must now shift our attention entirely to Inter. They are an experienced side, particularly dangerous in transitions, and very strong defensively.”
Barcelona are expected to be without Robert Lewandowski and Alejandro Balde for the semifinal, while Inter Milan received a boost with the return of Marcus Thuram to training. However, defender Benjamin Pavard will be unavailable due to injury.
