Mathibe: Khune needs to simplify his distribution

Former Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Aubrey Mathibe says Itumeleng Khune should change the way he distributes the ball.

Khune is known for starting attacks with long kicks from the back but he has lost his place in the Chiefs lineup this season after a few blunders, some of which were down to his distribution.

Mathibe reckons his former teammate should simplify his distribution, especially now that the likes of Siphiwe Tshabalala and Reneilwe Letsholonyane are no longer at the club.

“As a goalkeeper, you can’t be at the top all the time, and remember the defenders must help you, a not-so-good defender will expose you sometimes,” Mathibe told KickOff.

“Remember, this thing of passing the ball ‘the Khune way’, he was good because there was Siphiwe Tshabalala, there was Reneilwe Letsholonyane. Their first touches were not letting Khune down.

“Also I feel like he’s focused on it too much. He should have been clever and changed it after these guys I’ve mentioned left, like throwing the ball. If you check, most goalkeepers have adopted this Khune’s style.

“That’s why we don’t have many goalkeepers in South Africa because most have adopted the Khune way of kicking the ball rather than focusing on goalkeeping.”
