Nedbank Cup: Semi-Finals Preview

Quarter-Finals

Our writer previews the Nedbank Cup semi-finals taking place this weekend.

The semi-finals of the Nedbank Cup will take place this weekend. ABSA Premiership strugglers Chippa United will face a stern test against reigning champions SuperSport United on Saturday at Sisa Dukashe Stadium. And on Sunday, last year’s runners-up Orlando Pirates tackle Golden Arrows at Princess Magogo Stadium.

*Please note this article was written prior to their ABSA Premiership fixtures on Wednesday 17 May.

Saturday 20 May

Chippa United 28/10 | Draw 23/10 | SuperSport United 9/10
Despite reaching the semi-finals of the Nedbank Cup, Chippa United have been dreadful in the ABSA Premiership this season. The Chilli Boys are 15th in the table with 24 points, level with bottom-of-the-log Baroka FC, at the time of writing.

Since beating Jomo Cosmos 1-0 last month to reach their first ever Cup semi-final, Chippa have lost four in a row, failing to score in their last two games. SuperSport are aiming to win the competition in back-to-back seasons, with Stuart Baxter looking to leave the club on a high before taking up his role at Bafana Bafana.

Matsatsantsa are fourth in the PSL standings, with the fewest defeats (4) this season. Since knocking out Kaizer Chiefs last month, they’re unbeaten in six matches. Baxter’s charges should prove too strong against the Chilli Boys.

Sunday 21 May

Golden Arrows 28/10 | Draw 22/10 | Orlando Pirates 19/20
Golden Arrows have never won the Nedbank Cup trophy in their history, while Pirates – last year’s runners-up – have held the trophy twice in the past seven years.

These sides played in the opening round of the ABSA Premiership, with Tendai Ndoro scoring a hat-trick to give the Bucs a 3-1 victory. The teams also met in the Telkom Knockout Cup quarter-finals, which Pirates won 2-1 thanks to a 73rd minute winner from Luvuyo Memela.

With Arrows desperate to get their revenge against the Buccaneers, I’m expecting a tight affair. Pirates are winless in three matches, losing twice. Back the draw in 90 minutes.

DOUBLE @ 5/1
SuperSport Win 9/10
Arrows vs Pirates Draw 22/10
