The recent incidents involving radical supporters of Atletico Madrid, specifically members of the Frente Atletico, have resulted in significant consequences from UEFA.
During the Champions League match against Benfica in Lisbon, a minority of fans in the south stand engaged in unacceptable behaviour, including Nazi salutes, which has drawn strong condemnation.
Despite the fact that over 2,000 Atletico fans traveled to support their team, and the majority conducted themselves well, the actions of this radical group have led UEFA to impose harsh penalties.
As a consequence of prior infractions and this latest misconduct, a section of Atletico’s stadium will be closed for three matches.
UEFA’s swift action reflects its zero-tolerance approach to such incidents, aiming to deter further misconduct.
Atletico Madrid officials are particularly worried that repeated incidents within the next year could result in even stricter sanctions, including a potential ban on ticket sales for UEFA matches, which would heavily impact the club’s traveling supporters.
