Former Sundowns captain Hlompho Kekana feels it is important to complete his coaching badges even if he is in no rush to take up a club post.
The 38-year-old former SuperSport United, Bloemfontein Celtic and Mamelodi Sundowns star retired from the game at the end of the 2020/21 season.
He had struggled with injury in his final campaign with the Brazilians and was offered a non-playing role for the following campaign, that he ultimatelty turned down.
Kekana was seemingly on his way to join DStv Premiership side Sekhukhune United, but decided to rather hang up his boots than potentially risk tarnishing the legacy of a glittering career.
Now currently completing his CAF C License, Kekana explained that it is a natural progression for him to continue his football education.
He told FARPost: “I guess it’s the name of the game where pressure makes the game interesting. I think for us [it] is to make sure that we concentrate on getting these badges because they will help us.
“So it is important for me to concentrate on this process of getting the qualifications. When the time is right where I will have to use the knowledge that I have learned over the years. It will work to my advantage, and the people that I will be leading at the time will benefit.”

Kekana added: ‘It’s something that one should do, and I believe with the knowledge that we accumulated in football, it’s just to back it up with qualifications, and I think we are the right people to talk about the game because we have been in the game for too long.
“So it’s just a matter of equipping myself with these qualifications. I think they will help in the long run. So that when you speak about the game, you speak about something that you know in writing and knowledge of the game.”
