This past weekend, Pirates beat Liberian side LPRC Oilers 2-0 in the the first-leg of the CAF Confederation Cup play-off and in an interview with Liberian media afterwards, Ncikazi claimed that Bucs were currently at the same level as Sundowns.

Sundowns have been the form team in South Africa and on the continent over the last few years, having won the CAF Champions League in 2016 and being champions of domestic league for the last four seasons.

Pirates last won the league title in the 2011/12 season.

“There’s improvement. It’s important that we’ve got momentum now. Pirates are a big team. You’re expected to win in every match.

“We’re on the level of Sundowns but we even have more support than them,” said Ncikazi.

“So, given our level, we’re not achieving but we understand the process because we have new leadership [referring to himself and co-coach Fadlu Davids] and a lot of players have been sidelined by injuries.

“But now I think we’re on the right track towards achieving big things,” he added.

The Soweto Giants are next in action against Baroka on Thursday (19h30) at Orlando Stadium.
