Kaizer Chiefs are targeting a swift return to winning ways when they play host to Maritzburg United on Wednesday in what will be their final game of 2021.

Amakhosi saw their five-match unbeaten run halted in disappointing fashion as Royal AM clinched a 1-0 victory at Chatsworth Stadium in Durban on Sunday afternoon.

Head coach Stuart Baxter has been absent from the dugout for the last two fixtures after a wave of Covid-19 infections struck the club at the start of the month.

However, he will be hopeful of making a return on Wednesday, especially after seeing his side slump to a defeat at the hands of Royal AM.

Chiefs defender Austin Dube says the club’s players are determined to end the year on a high.

“We are doing all we can to prepare for the match,” Dube told kaizerchiefs.com.

“In away games, you have to adapt to certain conditions you’re not familiar with. But we have been doing well at home and playing at home we have that advantage.

“I believe if we stick to our own plan and not focus too much on what they (Maritzburg) do, but focus on what we do well and rectify our mistakes from the last game, we can do anything.”

While coach Ernst Middendorp’s position at the Maritzburg helm appears to be safe for now, club chairman Farook Kadodia has confirmed the club will carry out a review of recent results when the PSL takes a break.

As such, the two-time Chiefs coach could potentially see his fate sealed on Wednesday evening if Amakhosi record a comfortable win at FNB Stadium.

Maritzburg are winless in their last nine Premiership fixtures and occupy 12th place in the Premiership standings, just two points clear of the dreaded zone.
