NFD: Week 30 Preview

Week 30 Preview

Our football analyst previews the NFD gameweek 30 action which takes place on Sunday 5 May 2018.

The ultimate round of the 2017/18 NFD season is upon us with Highlands Park going to Stellenbosch to lift the trophy in a game that’s a dead rubber to them. In the headline fixture of the weekend, Jomo Cosmos, who have already secured a PSL promotion/play-off spot, face third-placed Black Leopards who are looking over their shoulders as Real Kings and Witbank Spurs can still pip them for a third-place finish.

Sunday 5 May

Black Leopards 11/10
Draw 22/10
Jomo Cosmos 22/10
This is a crucial match for the home side as only two points separate them from Real Kings and Witbank Spurs who lie fourth and fifth respectively. Lidoda Duvha were beaten 2-1 by a formidable Highlands Park side last week.

Jomo Cosmos don’t have so much to fight for as they mathematically can’t finish below third place. They go into this one with little or no pressure. Ezenkosi are undefeated in their last six league games, with a record of five wins and one draw. My money is on Leopards as they’re more desperate.

Mbombela United 14/10
Draw 2/1
Richards Bay 18/10
Mbombela United have already survived relegation by a whisker despite losing four and drawing two of their last six games as teams below them also dropped points. For Richards Bay, it’s a do or die clash as they’re only two points above the team they beat last week, Ubuntu Cape Town, who are in the relegation zone. I’m expecting the New Rich Boyz to box clever here and salvage a point away from home.

Real Kings 9/10
Draw 23/10
Cape Town All Stars 28/10
To earn a spot in the PSL promotional play off, Real Kings need to win this game and hope that Black Leopards drop points. The Magic Boys finally returned to winning ways last week after drawing four consecutive games when they beat bottom-placed Mthatha Bucks 2-0.

Eighth-placed Cape Town All Stars are winless over their last five games and going to KZN to face a side that’s in need of points will be a stern test. My money is on Real Kings.

Royal Eagles 18/10
Draw 2/1
Witbank Spurs 14/10
This is a game between Royal Eagles who have already survived relegation and Witbank Spurs who need to win and hope Real Kings and Black Leopards drop points. Eagles are unbeaten in their last five games with four draws and one win. On the other hand, Spurs have won four and lost one of their last five matches. The form book favours the visitors and I’m also backing them to win.

Stellenbosch 18/10
Draw 2/1
Highlands Park 14/10
It shall be interesting to see how both teams approach this one as Highlands Park’s coronation takes place after the match. Will the players let the occasion get to their heads? I think so. Remember, after having gone unbeaten since gameweek four, Highlands Park tasted defeat for the first time two games after their PSL promotion was confirmed.

On the flipside, Stellenbosch don’t have too much to fight for other than trying to spoil the party. This should end in a lovely draw.

Super Eagles 9/10
Draw 23/10
Mthatha Bucks 28/10
This one is between ABC Motsepe League-bound Mthatha Bucks as their relegation was confirmed three weeks ago and Super Eagles who are in a relegation dogfight. Amatholamnyama are winless in their last league 10 games while Eagles who still have something to fight for, have won only one of their last five games. I say Mthatha Bucks’ lack of motivation will see them lose another game.

Ubuntu Cape Town 19/10
Draw 21/10
Tshakhuma 13/10
Ubuntu Cape Town are in the relegation zone and their superb Nedbank Cup campaign might have interfered with their form in the league. To survive relegation, they have to win this game and hope that Uthongathi, Super Eagles or Richards Bay drop points. They face a Tshakhuma side that has won four of their last five games. I’m tipping Tshakhuma to triumph here.

Uthongathi 12/10
Draw 21/10
University of Pretoria 21/10
Uthongathi are by no means safe yet as they’re one of the three teams on 31 points and that’s only two points above Ubuntu Cape Town who are in the relegation zone. The Cane Cutters must win this one at home to avoid praying for favours from other teams. They have won only one of their last five games. University of Pretoria have also won one of their last five. I foresee this one ending in a draw.

TREBLE @8/1
Real Kings Win
Tshakhuma Win
Super Eagles Win
