Upington City’s hopes to make the Premier Soccer League (PSL) promotion/relegation playoffs have suffered a blow after the league’s disciplinary committee dismissed a case brought forward by the club.

The Northern Cape-based Motsepe Foundation Championship (MFC) outfit had launched a case against Milford FC, accusing the latter of failing to maintain the minimum required number of U23 players in one of their fixtures.

However, Upington failed to convince the committee to rule in their favour.

“In the end, the PSL DC ruled that the protest that Upington launched against Milford was without merit and accordingly dismissed with costs,” said PSL prosecutor Zola Majavu.

There were fears that the case might delay the conclusion of the MFC season this weekend.

The MFC is infamous for cases that are brought forward towards the end of each season, with clubs trying to avoid the axe or as an attempt to secure last-minute promotion.

Upington occupy sixth position on the log table with 43 points from 29 matches.

A victory in the boardroom would have seen them join the race for a spot in the playoffs ahead of their last game of the season against Casric Stars on Sunday.

Four teams, the University of Pretoria (48 points), Baroka FC (46), JDR Stars (46) and Maritzburg United (43) are still in the running for the two available spots in the playoffs.

The Clinton Larsen-coached Magesi FC have already secured automatic promotion to the DStv Premiership.

Majavu remained hopeful that the second tier would draw to a close on Sunday without problems.

“However, should such be the case I can confirm without a doubt that the judicial bodies of the league are in a state of readiness to deal with those protests or complaints expeditiously to ensure that the finalisation of the 2023 -24 season is not imperilled or otherwise delayed or marred with some controversy.”
