Ruben Amorim has informed his Manchester United players that they should not dispute the criticism from co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe.
In an interview earlier this week, Ratcliffe stated that some United players are “overpaid and not good enough.”
Ahead of the important Europa League clash with Real Sociedad on Thursday, Amorim was asked about these remarks. Instead of disagreeing with the British billionaire, Amorim emphasized that it is up to the players and staff to prove him wrong.
“To be honest, at this moment, everyone, myself included, and all the players are underperforming this season, but that’s something we can always improve,” Amorim said at a press conference on Wednesday.
“I include myself in that group of underperformers. If you’re a top player in this sport, and even I – many people believe I’m not good enough for the club—my belief is that results can change that perception. In training, I can see that the players are really determined to improve.”
Ratcliffe also highlighted several players whose transfer fees will continue to be paid through this summer.
He named signings who have struggled to make an impact at Old Trafford, including Jadon Sancho, Antony, Rasmus Hojlund, Andre Onana, and five-time Champions League winner Casemiro.
“When you mention players like Casemiro, for example, who has won everything, we all know these kinds of players are capable of much better performances,” Amorim noted. “That’s the focus. He was simply honest about it.”
“The goal is to change his perspective and the perspectives of others,” Amorim added.
Manchester United will be missing defenders Harry Maguire and Leny Yoro for the match against Real Sociedad. Mason Mount has returned to training after a three-month absence but won’t be available for this game. Manuel Ugarte, who has missed the last two matches, may be included in the squad.
“Mason Mount isn’t ready yet,” Amorim explained. “Leny is out. Harry Maguire won’t be playing in this one, but I’m hopeful he’ll be available for Sunday’s match against Leicester. Manu is in the squad, and I don’t think anyone else is returning.”
