Hail the queens of African football

History was made on Friday evening as Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies became the first CAFWCL winners after beating Ghanain side Hasaacas Ladies 2-0 in Cairo.

Sundowns’ two goals were scored in either half by Chuene Morifi and Andisiwe Mgcoyi. Banyana ba style, as they’re affectionately known, won the continental showpiece without conceding a goal in the entire tournament.

With this victory, Sundowns will look to complete their treble of Hollywoodbets Super League, COSAFA Qualifiers and CAFWCL.

Galaxy and Gallants come right

Bottom sides TS Galaxy and Marumo Gallants secured three points each when they defeated Swallows and SuperSport United respectively as they look to move away from the red zone.

The international break has clearly helped the cellar dwellers who have used the time afforded to them to work out any kinks in their game. TS Galaxy are next in action on Saturday at home against Cape Town City while Gallants face Maritzburg United at home on Wednesday.

No Hunt, No problem for Chippa United

Kurt Lentjies kicked off his coaching career with a 1-0 win against Baroka. Just like their opponents, Baroka were forced to make coaching adjustments, demoting Matsimela Thoka to the DStv Diski Challenge team while promoting Kgoloko Thobejane as head coach.

KZN sides claim draws in Pretoria in GladAfrica Championship

Both KZN GladAfrica Championship sides could only muster draws in Pretoria this weekend as Richards Bay held JDR 1-1 on Saturday afternoon before Uthongathi and Tuks played out to a goalless draw on Sunday afternoon. The JDR-Uthongathi match was disrupted by bad weather while both teams were pushing for a winner. When the match resumed, the spark was no longer there and both teams settled for a point.

Team of the Week: Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies

There was only ever one team in the running for the Team of the Week accolade following Sundowns Ladies historic win in Cairo. Jerry Tshabalala’s charges were outstanding throughout the tournament but will need to refocus on domestic action in the Hollywoodbets Super League.
