There’s a big myth around the January transfer window with people saying the biggest deals don’t happen during this period. In recent seasons, that hasn’t been the case as we’ve seen some interesting transfers happening in the first month of the year.

Mamelodi Sundowns have been the biggest culprits in January as the Brazilians snatched Emiliano Tade from AmaZulu last season and signed Gaston Sirino in the summer of 2018. Orlando Pirates boosted their squad by adding Alfred Ndengane from Bloemfontein Celtics while Kaizer Chiefs signed Reeve Frosler from Bidvest Wits and Nigerian shot-stopper Daniel Akpeyi from Chippa United.

There have been some interesting links that have been doing the rounds in the media. The biggest one being Zimbabwean captain, Knowledge Musona, who has been linked with a return to South Africa and Mamelodi Sundowns seem to be the favourites to snatch the “smiling assassin”. Log leaders Kaizer Chiefs have been linked with another Zesco United star, Anthony Akumu, who plays the holding midfield position, while Pirates are still in search of a centre-back with Frederic Nsabiyumva of Chippa seeming to be the club’s likeliest target.

The Premier Soccer League have confirmed that the transfer window opened on Thursday morning, 02 January 2020 and will close at midnight on Friday, 31 January 2020.

Let’s take a look at some of the biggest deals that have been confirmed in this period:

Milos Lacny
SKF Sered (Slovakia) – AmaZulu – Free

AmaZulu’s overseas scout was called into action once again after doing a great job when bringing Argentine forward Emiliano Tade who hit the ground running at Usuthu and was eventually sold to Mamelodi Sundowns. During the start of the campaign, the KZN-based outfit announced New Zealand striker Andre de Jong who started very well but couldn’t get going due to injuries. AmaZulu were forced to bring in another goal scoring machine as the club has been struggling in the last third scoring only nine goals in 15 matches. The club announced the signing of Slovakian striker, Milos Lacny.

Granwald Scott
Bidvest Wits – Stellenbosch – Free

Granwald Scott returns to Cape Town after things didn’t go according to plan at Wits as the former Ajax Cape Town captain saw his contract being terminated at the beginning of the month. At 32, this could be Scott’s last big contract unless he regains his Ajax form.

Mduduzi Mdantsane
Baroka – Cape Town City – Free

This announcement came as a surprise for many as Mduduzi Mdantsane was heavily linked with a return to Naturena. There was a lot of drama after Cape Town City confirmed the signing with Baroka chairman Khurishi Mphahlele claiming that Mdantsane was still their player and was never issued with a clearance. However, City did a cheeky response on Twitter when posting Mdantsane’s clearance responding to the video.

Ovidy Karuru
AmaZulu – Stellenbosch – Free

Since returning from Europe, Ovidy Karuru has struggled in the Absa Premiership. His stint at Kaizer Chiefs was one to forget for Karuru as he managed only five caps in two seasons at Amakhosi. He moved to AmaZulu in search of more game time and indeed that’s where he showed his quality scoring eight goals in 59 appearances for Usuthu but was out of favour since the arrival of Josef Vukusic with reports suggesting the Zimbabwean had a bad attitude. Stellenbosch are desperate to save their PSL status and anyone with experience will do for the Cape Town-based outfit, while Karuru will have until the end of the season to prove himself once again after signing a short-term contract.

Bienvenu Eva Nga
CD Costa do Sol (Mozambique) – Bidvest Wits – Undisclosed fee

Bidvest Wits’ involvement in the CAF Confederations Cup has given Gavin Hunt an opportunity to scout players across the continent. Hunt has been complaining about his misfiring strikers this season and feels they are not helping Gift Motupa who has been their main source for goals. Wits announced the signing of Cameroonian hitman Bienvenu Eva Nga from Mozambique outfit Costa do Sol and the Students are busy working on his work permit meaning we might just see Wits’ latest addition in the near future.
