PSL: Week 10 Preview (Wednesday)

Wednesday night will bring down the curtain on week 10 of the Absa Premiership. There are some intriguing fixtures in store including a fascinating clash between Ajax Cape Town and a rejuvenated Orlando Pirates side.
The midweek fixtures provide us with another opportunity to make some money and I will try my utmost to find us a few winners.

Wednesday 4 October

SuperSport United  23/20
Draw  21/10
Bloemfontein Celtic  24/10
SuperSport’s erratic start to the season continued last weekend as they were held to a 0-0 draw by Free State Stars. The result leaves Matsatsantsa languishing in eleventh position on the league table with just nine points to their name. Like their opponents for Wednesday night’s clash, Celtic were also held to a goalless draw this past weekend. Unlike their opponents, though, Celtic still occupy a position in the top half of the league table; they sit in fifth place and are only three points off table-toppers, Platinum Stars. With SuperSport’s defense leaking goals like it’s going out of fashion (they’ve shipped 11 goals in their nine fixtures) and Celtic scoring at a rate of a goal a game, this match could well be a high-scoring thriller. I’m backing Celtic to sneak a win away from home at 24/10.

Platinium Stars  18/10
Draw  22/10
Bidvest Wits  13/10
Platinium Stars have been the surprise package of the season thus far. Cavin Johnson’s charges have scored the most goals in the league this season and are yet to lose a game. While their goal scoring exploits have been impressive (15 goals in eight matches), their miserly defense has also contributed to their fantastic start to the campaign, conceding just five goals this season. Their opponents for Wednesday have also enjoyed a solid start to the campaign and are only a solitary point behind the log leaders. With both team’s defences in formidable form, there’s likely to be limited goal scoring opportunities at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium on Wednesday night. My money is on the home shading the win at 18/10.

Chippa United  17/4
Draw  49/20
Mamelodi Sundowns 13/20
Chippa United will play host to a free scoring Sundowns side on Wednesday evening. The Chilli Boys are coming off the back of a 2-1 victory over high-flying Mpumalanga Black Aces. The win moved Chippa up to ninth place on the log- six points off second placed Sundowns. The Brazilians also come into this game off the back of a victory over a relegation threatened side. They were in devastating form last Saturday, banging in three goals against a struggling Maritzburg United side. Both sides have been in decent goalscoring form this season. Downs have found the back of the net on 14 occasions while the Chilli Boys have scored thirteen goals in their nine fixtures. With both teams finding the back of the net with consummate ease, I’m inclined to back to the both teams to score market at 21/20.

Ajax Cape Town  21/20
Draw  22/10
Orlando Pirates  23/10
The Sea Robbers come into this game off the back of a morale-boosting, 3-1, victory over their arch rivals. The win will have given Pirates a massive lift after their relatively slow start to the season. Ajax had last weekend off as their game with Golden Arrows was rescheduled. We will have to wait and see if the extended rest period helps or hinders the Cape-based side. With only three points separating the sides on the log, they will both be going all out for victory, and I think that may come back to haunt the Capetonians. I can see Eric Tinkler setting up his side to play on the counter, and catch Ajax cold. My money is on a Pirates win and 23/10 it’s definitely worth backing them.
