PSL: Week 20 Preview

Week 20 Preview

This is another opportunity for Kaizer Chiefs to stretch their lead at the summit of the PSL standings while Mamelodi Sundowns and Bidvest Wits are busy with CAF commitments.

Amakhosi were held to a 1-1 draw by Black Leopards this past weekend and will be looking to make amends when they visit Golden Arrows. Elsewhere, Orlando Pirates welcome bottom-placed AmaZulu to the Orlando Stadium. Let’s take a closer look at this weekend’s action.

Friday 24 January

Cape Town City 1/1
Draw 23/10
Black Leopards 26/10
Cape Town City finally won their first game under Jan Olde Riekerink when they beat title-chasing Bidvest Wits 2-0. They head into this match without the services of Craig Martin who was sent off for a second bookable offence. Leopards might be without Mogakolodi Ngele who was stretchered off a couple of minutes after scoring a beautiful free-kick to level matters against Kaizer Chiefs. Lidoda Duvha played some exciting football against the table toppers and they seem to have adapted to Cavin Johnson’s tactics.

Edwin Gyimah, who was solid at the back, won the man-of-the-match award and if he produces such a performance against the likes of Kermit Erasmus, they will have a chance of shocking the Citizens. I think City’s victory was a fluke and they will come unstuck against Leopards hence I’m putting my money on the Limpopo outfit.

SuperSport United 7/10
Draw 26/10
Chippa United 37/10
SuperSport United expectedly lost against title-chasing Mamelodi Sundowns and they will be looking to collect maximum points when they host Norman Mapeza’s Chippa United. The Chilli Boys’ dramatic turnaround under the Zimbabwean has been well-documented as they have lost one of their last five games which has seen them move off the foot of the table and climb up to 10th. This is a battle of two great Zimbabwean tacticians and I foresee it ending in a draw.

Saturday 25 January

Golden Arrows 5/1
Draw 11.4
Kaizer Chiefs 11/20
Steve Komphela’s Golden Arrows welcome his former employees to Moses Mabhida Stadium which is often used by the visitors as their alternative home ground. Abafana Besthende have been indifferent this season with six defeats, six wins and six draws.

On the other hand, Samir Nurkovic continued his impressive scoring form with another stunning header in the 1-1 draw against Black Leopards. Amakhosi will have George Maluleka back from suspension and as per usual he will be looking to deliver those crosses for Nurkovic and Leonardo Castro. I foresee Chiefs winning this one comfortably.

Stellenbosch 17/20
Draw 24/10
Polokwane City 3/1
Stellenbosch have suddenly turned their season around after recording two consecutive wins against Highlands Park and Baroka which has seen them climb up to 11th on the table. They host a Polokwane City side which has won only one of their last 14 games across all competitions, losing 11 times in the process. I’m confident on Stellies winning this one comfortably.

Orlando Pirates 2/9
Draw 47/10
AmaZulu 10/1
Orlando Pirates are still unbeaten under Josef Zinnbauer with four wins and one draw. Gabadinho Mhango has been in sizzling form with eight goals in those five games which is a remarkable record. AmaZulu have lost 10 of their 19 games so far this season and they are rooted to the foot of the table. Remarkably, 10 of their 11 goals have come from one source, Bongi Ntuli. Orlando Pirates should win this quite comfortably with Mhango finding the back of the net.

Sunday 26 January

Baroka 19/10
Draw 23/10
Maritzburg United 13/10
This is a game of two teams with contrasting fortunes as Maritzburg are unbeaten in their last seven league games and currently occupy sixth place on the table. On the other hand, Baroka have lost four of their last five games and they couldn’t hold their own against embattled Stellenbosch last week. I’m expecting a straightforward Maritzburg United win.

TREBLE @ 7/2
Kaizer Chiefs Win 11/20
Orlando Pirates Win 2/9
Maritzburg United Win 13/10
