PSL: Week Six Preview

Week Six Preview

Our football analyst predicts the results of the upcoming PSL Week Six fixtures which kick off on Saturday 21 September 2019.

Table-topping Kaizer Chiefs suffered their first defeat of the season when they succumbed 1-0 to Polokwane City who are now second on the log. By a way of contrast, Orlando Pirates returned to winning ways courtesy of a 2-1 victory over Chippa United. That result has seen The Chilli Boys show coach Clinton Larsen the exit door.

Let’s have a look at how gameweek six is likely to pan out.

Saturday 21 September

Chippa United 29/20
Draw 17/10
Bloemfontein Celtic 23/10
The Chilli Boys head into this one off the back of a four-match winless run which has resulted in them parting company with coach Clinton Larsen. Former AmaZulu and Santos defender Duran Francis is rumoured to be in line to take over the coaching reins in the interim.

On the other hand, Celtic came back from a goal down to beat newly-promoted Stellenbosch 2-1 with Maloisane Ramasimong producing a man of the match performance. Phunya Sele Sele have been inconsistent this season with a record of two wins, two defeats and one draw. However, I expect the visitors to get the better of embattled Chippa.

Polokwane City 18/10
Draw 17/10
SuperSport United 37/20
Polokwane City are tied on 10 points with table-topping Kaizer Chiefs and with two games left before the first Q-Innovation of the season, they’d be looking for nothing short of maximum points. They were superb the last time out, edging the table-toppers 1-0. SuperSport United have done well so far this season with Bradley Grobler and Thamsanqa Gabuza finding the back of the net at will.
The MTN8 game in midweek might be a distraction as they face Mamelodi Sundowns on Wednesday evening. This past weekend they played out to a thrilling 3-3 draw against Cape Town City. Both teams have MTN8 football in midweek and this should be a slow-paced game ending with a share of the spoils.

Stellenbosch 23/20
Draw 18/10
Black Leopards 28/10
Stellenbosch are one of the four winless teams so far this season and they are still in the relegation zone. Their experienced signings like Ryan Moon, Robyn Johannes, Nyiko Mobbie, Morgan Gould, and Marc Van Heerden couldn’t help them hold onto a 1-0 lead against Bloemfontein Celtic as they relinquished it to lose 2-1.
Black Leopards lost the Limpopo derby game against Baroka 2-0 and they have won only one of their five games so far this season. They will have a tough time in Cape Town against hungry hosts. Back Stellies to register their first win of the season.

Mamelodi Sundowns 13/20
Draw 23/10
Maritzburg United 9/2
Having eased past Cote d’Or Football Club 5-0 in their Champions League fixture this past weekend, Sundowns have a mammoth of a fixture against SuperSport United in the MTN8 on Wednesday evening before this league game. Coach Pitso Mosimane rotated his squad, fielding the likes of Reyaad Pieterse, Oupa Manyisa, Motjeka Madisha and Sphelele Mkhulise in Seychelles.
Maritzburg United are winless so far this season and they must turn their fortunes around without the services of Jeremy Brockie who is on loan from their opponents. Sundowns should collect maximum points here.

Bidvest Wits 7/4
Draw 18/10
Orlando Pirates 18/10
Bidvest Wits were in CAF Confederations Cup action this past weekend as they were beaten by Young Buffaloes 1-0 in Swaziland. The Clever Boys are placed third on the Absa Premiership standings with three wins and one defeat so far this season.
They face a Pirates side which has just returned to winning ways after beating Chippa United 2-1 this past weekend with 22-year-old Tshegofatso Mabaso scoring a brace. Frenchman Joris Delle made his debut in goals and had a great game. This will be a tightly-contested encounter but I believe Pirates have enough quality to edge it.

Sunday 22 September

Baroka 31/10
Draw 17/10
Highlands Park 43/20
Baroka won the Limpopo derby clash against Black Leopards 2-0 on Sunday and this time they come up against a Highlands Park who will be having an MTN8 game on Tuesday evening, four days before this game. The Lions of the North didn’t have any competitive football this past weekend as their opponents were participating in a CAF competition. I think the teams will cancel each other out.

Cape Town City 11/10
Draw 2/1
Golden Arrows 11/4
Cape Town City shared the spoils with SuperSport United this past weekend in a scintillating 3-3 draw. Thabo Nodada who recently returned from injury bagged a brace and talisman Kermit Erasmus also found the back of the net. City must sort out their defensive frailties as they have conceded eight goals in five games so far this season.
Arrows relinquished a 1-0 lead to draw 1-1 against relegation-threatened AmaZulu. This will be tough one to call as both teams have started the season indifferently, but I’ll take my chance with the hosts. Back Benni McCarthy’s boys to triumph.

Tuesday 24 September

AmaZulu 19/10
Draw 18/10
Kaizer Chiefs 33/20
This Heritage Day fixture is between two teams with contrasting fortunes as Kaizer Chiefs top the log while AmaZulu are bottom-placed. Chiefs are chasing the Q1 incentive while Usuthu are fighting for survival with rumours flying around that coach Cavin Johnson might be sacked after failing to win any of the team’s five opening games. I’m a KZN boy but I have to be honest and admit that foresee Chiefs collecting maximum points.
TREBLE @11/1
Mamelodi Sundowns Win 13/20
Orlando Pirates Win 18/10
Kaizer Chiefs Win 33/20
