DOWN TO THE WIRE: Storm brewing ahead of Motsepe Foundation Championship finale, as Baroka, Tuks, Maritzburg United, all eye DStv Premiership return

All that is left for Magesi is to wrap up the 2023/24 Motsepe Foundation Championship with a win over Venda Football Academy, which would be merely just placing a cherry on top as they gained promotion to the DStv Premiership with two games to spare.

Magesi mentor Clinton Larsen delivered the Polokwane side to the land of milk and honey after just 15 months with the team.

If Magesi manage to collect maximum points in their last game, the club will finish on 59 points – a league-winning feat last achieved in the 2016/17 season by Thanda Royal Zulu, who collected 62 points.

With the dust settled at the top and at the bottom, as Platinum City Rovers have been relegated, the small matter of the two teams that will take part in the promotion/relegation playoffs still needs to be decided.

The University of Pretoria and Baroka FC are currently second and third with two points separating them, but JDR Stars and Maritzburg United stand a chance to sneak into the playoffs.

However, this season’s permutations are a lot more complicated than usual. Here, we break down all the different possibilities on the final day of the MFC on Sunday as the simultaneous kick-off is highly anticipated.

Maritzburg United (43 points)

The Team of Choice are away to JDR. Maritzburg will need to beat JDR and hope that AmaTuks beat Baroka, meaning United would finish in third place tied on 46 points with Baroka but will qualify with a better goal difference.

JDR Stars (46 points)

A draw between AmaTuks and Bakgaga will set the bells ringing as they would need to collect maximum points against the Team of Choice, meaning JDR would finish third behind the University of Pretoria, or could go as high as second, depending on goal difference. A loss or draw will spell disaster for them.

University of Pretoria (48 points)

The ball is in their court as the capital city need just a draw to pave their way into the playoffs. At this point, the capital city-based side can also afford to lose against Baroka and hope that JDR does not win against Maritzburg.

Baroka (46 points)

The Limpopo outfit are in a tricky position as a defeat at Tuks, and a win for Maritzburg will spell a bitter end to their campaign. Maritzburg have a greater goal difference, meaning Baroka cannot lose their match. At the same time, a draw with Tuks is risky as JDR can leapfrog them into the top three.
