A late Lyle Lakay equaliser saw SuperSport United hold Cape Town City FC to a 1-1 draw in a DStv Premiership clash at Cape Town Stadium.

Cape Town City took the lead five minutes after half-time when a brilliant long ball from Taahir Goedeman released Khanyisa Mayo, who lobbed the onrushing SuperSport goalkeeper Ricardo Goss for his ninth DStv Premiership goal of the season and tenth in all appearances.

SuperSport missed a couple of chances from set-pieces through Etiosa Ighodaro and Ime Okon but would eventually capitalise on a dead-ball situation when Lakay’s curling free-kick in the sixth minute of stoppage time evaded everyone and crept into the far corner for a share of the spoils in the most dramatic of fashions.

The sides remained locked on 31 points with City in second by virtue of a superior goal difference. It is the second 1-1 draw the sides have played to in the space of just over a week as they drew by the same margin in the Nedbank Cup last Tuesday.

In the alternate fixture, Golden Arrows’ dreadful run continued as they fell to a 1-0 defeat to Sekhukhune United at Mpumalanga Stadium.

There was also a late goal in this match as Elias Mokwana’s 90th-minute strike separated the two sides. It came after a corner was cleared out to Mokwana, who drilled the ball low into keeper Sifiso Mlungwana’s left-hand corner.

Sekhukhune had the better of the opening exchanges in the match prompting Arrows coach Mabhuti Khenyeza into making an early change on the half-hour mark by replacing Nhlanhla Zwane with Nduduzo Sibiya. Mokwana and Chibuike Ohizu threatened for the visitors, while Siyanda Mthanti and Angelo van Rooi came close for Abafana Bes’thende.

Arrows have now lost their last 10 matches in succession and are languishing in 10th in the DStv Premiership standings, while Sekhukhune have leapfrogged them into eighth position.
