GLODY MAKABI LILEPO: Unmasking Kaizer Chiefs’ new R9.6-million attacker – what it means for Ranga Chivaviro & Ashley du Preez

Kaizer Chiefs fans will be pleased to know that their new striker is fit and ready to go. The only thing that might delay him would be the wait for a work permit and his adaptation to the PSL along with integration to the team.

The club might not have confirmed his capture but the cat is out of the bag as Amakhosi and French Ligue 3 outfit Valencinnes have reached an agreement for the sale of the 27-year-old, who still had about a year and half left on his deal.

Amakhosi and the Democratic Republic of Congo player are believed to have also agreed on personal terms and now, the deal is subject to a medical check, which will be merely procedural as Lilepo has been actively involved with Valenciennes.

Lilepo is essentially a winger, who played 90 minutes in the Coupe de France last week. He has been involved in half-a-dozen games between November 8 and January 14, netting one goal and providing a single assist.

Lilepo moved to Valenciennes from Sudanese side Al-Hilal Omdurman in November 2023 for an amount estimated to be in the region of R9.2-million.

Before moving to France, the former Renaissance forward turned out for Congolese giants AS Vita where he netted three Caf Champions League goals in five outings. He was equally as productive for Al-Hilal in the 2022/23 season where he returned five goals in seven games.

His move to Chiefs, according to a report by Farpost, suggests that Amakhosi forked out an amount understood to be in the region of €500,000 (approximately R9.6-million).

What does this mean for Chivaviro and Du Preez?

When Nassredine Nabi joined Chiefs, his focus was on reinforcing the defence more than anything else. Nabi signed Rushwin Dortley, Bongani Sam, Bradley Cross; took Njabulo Blom on loan with the idea of fielding him as a right-back.

Fiacre Ntwari was also recruited by Nabi while Thatayaone Ditlhokwe was resuscitated by Nabi. The only offensive signing Nabi made earlier this season was Gaston Sirino, and now, the addition of Lilepo and Tashreeq Morris (whose move from SuperSport United is subject to an announcement).

Morris and Lilepo’s addition to the team is likely to push Chaviviro and Du Preez down the pecking order, provided that they hit the ground running.

Chivaviro has netted four goals in 15 games across all competition this season, a far cry from the efforts that saw Amakhosi lure him at the start of the 2023/24 campaign. Chivaviro had scored 10 goals in 19 league games and seven strikes in 10 Caf Confederation Cup matches.

Du Preez’s stats in the league this season are almost as identical to that of Chivaviro in the. He played a dozen games and scored two goals.

The 27-year-old is in his third season with Amakhosi and even though he featured 23 and 25 times in the last two terms – Du Preez has not firmly established himself as the go-to man when it comes to the supplying of goals.

Once the two new editions are signed, sealed and delivered at Naturena, this could be the beginning of the end of Du Preez and Chivaviro’s, whose deals both expire in June.
