Siyabonga “Bhele” Nomvethe has long been regarded as the greatest marksman in the PSL history, but his crown looks set to be snatched very soon.

Let’s dive into the official numbers and look at the top five goal scorers in the PSL era, including the man set to knock Bhele off his perch.

Siyabonga Nomvethe: 129 Goals

After hanging his boots up at the age of 40, Nomvethe has long held the title as the most lethal striker in South African PSL history. His playing days saw him represent a host of clubs and he was a fan favourite no matter the jersey he donned. Adored by fans of Kaizer Chiefs, Moroka Swallows, Amazulu and many more, Bhele was devastating in front of goal and has held the record in the PSL for years.

Peter Shalulile: 127 Goals

Hot on the heels of Nomvethe is Mamelodi Sundown’s Peter Shalulile. The Namibian forward joined Masandawana in 2020 from Highlands Park and has become a revelation at the Pretoria-based side. Shalulile needs just two goals to equal Nomvethe’s record and three to overtake the legendary striker and etch his name in South African football history.

Bradley Grobler: 114 Goals

The 37-year-old Bradley Grobler has been ageing like fine wine. After representing clubs like Platinum Stars and Ajax Cape Town, the clinical striker has made SuperSport his home and is within touching distance of both Shalulile and Nomvethe.

Daniel Mudau: 110 Goals

A one club man, Daniel Mudau terrorised defences in the PSL in the late 90s and early 2000s. Affectionately known as Mambush by the Masandawana faithful, Mudau was a nightmare to defend against with his speed and goal scoring threat often getting the better of most defenders in the PSL.

Mabhuti Khanyeza: 110 Goals

Rounding up the list is another household name in South African football. Mabhuti Khanyeza has enjoyed a long, successful career in the PSL and has represented some of the best teams including Kaizer Chiefs, SuperSport United and Golden Arrows.

It looks like it will be just a matter of time before “Sha Sha” breaks the long-standing record of Nomvethe to become the most lethal striker in the PSL era.
