The 35-year-old Khune was included in Sunday’s matchday squad in a DStv Premiership clash at the Moses Mabhida Stadium due to the absence of second-choice goalkeeper Brandon Petersen, who is suspended.

The veteran shot-stopper is seeing out the remainder of his current deal as an active player before being touted by the club for a role in the backroom staff in the near future.

“Khune’s presence in the dressing room has always been a source of positivity,” Johnson said.

“His two-decade tenure with the club speaks volumes about his commitment and contribution.

“He’s back on the bench for now due to Brandon’s suspension, but Bruce remains our top choice.

“It’s a competitive environment, and Khune understands that he must fight for his place.”

Amakhosi next face Polokwane City and the relegated Cape Town Spurs in their final two fixtures that could potentially be the swansong of Khune’s playing career.
