Kermit Erasmus to Kaizer Chiefs? ‘Always stay ready’, insists ex-Orlando Pirates star as future remains speculative

When you think of the elite group of players who have played for Orlando Pirates, Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns, Colllins Mbesuma tops that list. Kermit Erasmus could be the latest addition to this select group if he is lucky enough to end up at Naturena.

Having showed up for Sundowns between 2020 and 2022, and played for the Buccaneers on two separate spells, Erasmus is a free agent and has not closed the door on the possibility of joining Amakhosi.

In an interview with Soccerbeat, Erasmus shied away from revealing his interest in representing Chiefs, but his body language and facial expressions suggested that the 34-year-old has an appetite to turn out for the Glamour Boys.

Chiefs currently have Ranga Chivaviro, Wandile Duba and Ashely du Preez as options up front, while SuperSport United’s Tashreeq Morris is believed to be headed to Naturena and Christian Saile going the opposite direction.

If Chiefs sporting director, Kaizer Motaung Jr decides to pursue Erasmus – Motaung must be warned that there is a big banner around the free agent, stating that his services will not come cheap. Erasmus turned down offers from two clubs because parties could not agree on personal terms.

“I’m always staying ready. A lot of people who understand football know what I’m about,” Erasmus responded to a question about the possibility of joining Chiefs before he went on to clarify why he did not join the Cape Town Sours and Chippa United.

“I spoke to the chairman (Ari Efstathiou) and I had a good chat with him about being able to train and the coach wanted to know what my intentions were and that was to see if it would be possible to join the team and it was more to keep fit. They were happy with what they saw in a short space of time – I think I just trained for a week.

“From the offer they presented me through my agent, it just wasn’t worth my time and the chairman opened his door to me and if ever I want to come back and work on the strikers, I’ve always shown my appreciation to that and he knows that.

“It was a good period to train with the boys and be around the facility and be around football again. I had a different idea of what I thought would be an offer. It is not that I was not happy with the offer, it just was not agreed on,” Erasmus explained.

As the former Downs striker was edging closer to returning to the top-flight after he was discarded Pirates ahead of the start of the current campaign. Things did not turn out the way he’d hoped.

“The same thing [happened at Chippa]. I trained for like two weeks and the coaches who are there now are coaches who I’ve played with during their playing days, I was fortunate to be teammates with them. They were happy with what they saw at training, but it was just about the duration of terms and numbers.

“Sometimes it is not what you discussed and what is offered is not what is agreed on. I would not say the disagreement in that, but the misunderstanding of that and then you don’t find common ground.

“No hard feelings, it is just business, we are all looking out for ourselves and unfortunately, it was not possible. I continue keeping fit, at least I’ve got the beach, and I am using the same as much as I can because it is beneficial for the muscles,” Erasmus explained.
