As the domestic league draws to an end, there has been ongoing debate on which player has done enough to take home the prestigious accolade.

Many names including Orlando Pirates’ skilful midfielder Patrick Maswanganyi and Stellenbosch FC’s standout striker Iqraam Rayners have been mentioned.

Johnson likewise opined that many players throughout the league have raised their hands with great individual performances.

“There are quite a few people who have impressed me, the first person that comes to my mind is Teboho Mokoena and the other one is Ronwen Williams,” said Johnson.

“I mean, they have played in the African Football League (AFL) and also in CAF and have done very well.”

While the AFL doesn’t fall under the PSL banner, the duo did inspire Sundowns to clinch the lucrative competition earlier in the season to become the inaugural champions.

Mokoena and Williams similarly played a pivotal role in Bafana’s impressive run at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations earlier this year. Bafana returned home with a bronze medal.

On the domestic front, the Sundowns duo lifted the DStv Premiership title and find themselves in the Nedbank Cup final where they will resume their rivalry with Pirates at Mbombela Stadium on 1 June.

In last year’s end-of-season awards, Mokoena beat out stiff competition from Williams and Pirates’ Monnapule Saleng to be crowned last year’s Footballer of the Season.
