As Kaizer Chiefs handed out new contracts on Thursday to two goalkeepers, with both Bruce Bvuma and Brandon Petersen signing new deals, there was no mention of former skipper and club stalwart Itumeleng Khune who is currently serving a suspension.

Khune, who signed a new one-year deal at the start of the season has not played for Chiefs since their November defeat to arch-rivals Orlando Pirates.

Subsequent to that he was found guilty of breaching the club’s code of conduct with the club’s football manager Bobby Motaung confirming on Thursday that Khune was still going through the suspension process.

Speaking to The Sowetan he said: “I can’t share the time frame as to when he’ll be integrated with the team, but he’s still in the process of suspension.

“Remember, he was suspended by the disciplinary committee, so there’s a process and he’s following that process.

“The suspension may be expiring soon, but there are still processes to be followed before he forms part of the team again.”

Khune, who was suspended after allegedly arriving drunk at training. The disciplinary committee that heard his case ruled that: “During his absence, Khune will be expected to attend and actively participate in certain programmes designed to support his personal growth and development, with support from the club.

“These programmes are specifically aimed at helping him address challenges and issues he is facing, while promoting a positive team culture.”

These are the processes to which Motaung was referring, which suggest that Khune has yet to start, or complete, the required courses. If he does not meet the requirements as laid out by the DC before the end of the season, it means he has already played his last game for Chiefs.
