NEWS: Former Kaizer Chiefs defender turned commentator Siphiwe Mkhonza dies

Bafana Bafana defender, football journeyman and commentator Siphiwe Mkhonza has passed away after a short illness.

Mkhonza, who played seven times for South Africa, spent time with a host of DStv Premiership clubs, most notably Kaizer Chiefs, for whom he appeared 44 times. He also played for Golden Arrows, Bloemfontein Celtic, SuperSport United and AmaZulu.

After retiring as a player, he worked as a commentator where he was a regular pundit and analyst on SABC Sport.

Confirming the player’s passing a statement from his family said: “Siphiwe Mkhonza passed away in the early hours on Tuesday”.

Social media football channel Lim Sports Zone wrote: “Mkhonza has been suffering from a kidney infection. He was admitted to Charlotte Maxeke a month ago and was released after showing signs of recovery.

“May his Soul Rest in Peace.”

Mkhonza, who went by the nickname Doctor Mnandi was 45 years old.
