Arthur Zwane, the former Kaizer Chiefs coach, recently revealed how he received a surprising call from AmaZulu FC president Sandile Zungu.

This unexpected call was aimed at luring Zwane to join the Durban-based club after they parted ways with their Spanish head coach, Pablo Franco Martin, and his assistant, Aitor van den Brule.

AmaZulu had been actively searching for a new coach, with notable figures like Benni McCarthy, Ernst Middendorp, and Clinton Larsen reportedly in the running for the position. However, Zungu’s decision to appoint Zwane as a co-coach alongside Vusumuzi Vilakazi caught many by surprise.

At Kaizer Chiefs, Zwane, affectionately known as “10111,” had been reassigned to a role as youth coach following the appointment of Cavin Johnson as the senior team’s head coach.

Zwane shared the story of how the offer from AmaZulu came about during an interview on Ukhozi FM’s Prime Time Sport, where he explained that the call from Zungu was completely unexpected.

“I think it was on the 8 (of October) around lunchtime when I received a call from the president (Sandile Zungu) asking whether I would be available then that’s how it all started,” Zwane said.

“To be honest I didn’t know what the call was about but then I guessed that time that the call was about the job because when I saw that it was the president I was shocked.

“I didn’t know what to do but I said to myself take time because I was busy with something but when I was done with what I was doing then I spoke with the president.

“We spoke with the president then he said he would speak with the management of the club (Kaizer Chiefs) and discuss with them (that he wants to hire me) then tell him what I think.

“So, I think that is why the negotiations went well on the Kaizer Chiefs management side and with the president.

“The way he (Zungu) handled the situation I was pleased with it because it set me free. So, I don’t do things that I’m not supposed to do because there are contracts in place so we must respect that.

“And we know that there were rules that must be followed. So, I couldn’t do as I please, but I followed the rules.”

Usuthu are in a tough spot in the current Betway Premiership season, having lost their first three matches and sitting at the bottom of the table with zero points.

The pressure is on for coaches Zwane and Vilakazi to turn things around, and they face a significant challenge when the league resumes after the FIFA international break.

Their upcoming fixture against Orlando Pirates at Orlando Stadium on Friday, 25 October, kick-off is at 19:30
