Mamelodi Sundowns' coach Manqoba Mngqithi expressed dissatisfaction with his team’s offensive display despite a decisive 4-0 victory over Kaizer Chiefs in the Carling Knockout quarterfinals at FNB Stadium on Saturday.

Sundowns delivered a commanding performance, effectively securing the game in the first half with a 3-0 lead.

Iqraam Rayners opened the scoring with a brace, followed by a goal from Peter Shalulile. In the second half, Khuliso Mudau extended the lead, sealing Chiefs’ fate.

In his post-match comments, Mngqithi highlighted his philosophy of aggressive, high-scoring play.

He emphasized his preference for a relentless approach to goal-scoring, urging his players to capitalise on every opportunity to ensure a dominant scoreline.

Mngqithi’s strategy reflects his commitment to building a formidable offensive unit, as Sundowns continue to assert their dominance in South African football with a clear focus on attacking prowess and efficiency.

“Personally, as the coach I’ve always enjoyed having teams that score lots of goals. I think I still have a lot of records even in amateur football,” Mngqithi said.

“Where my top goal scorer probably was at 57 goals you know because I’m that type of a coach that wants my team to score.”

Sundowns have already scored 32 goals in 13 games they have played so far this season and coach Mngqithi still believes that people are yet to see what to expect from his club up front.

“And the relentlessness that you (media) seem to be up lauding at the moment, I’m very unhappy with the number of goals we scored today because I think we could have scored a lot of goals,” Mngqithi added.

“And it’s important when you’ve got that opportunity to do that (scoring) because Bayern Munchen does it.
“And Leverkusen does it when there’s a chance. And the same Sundowns could score 24 goals.

“So, we should always use that as the benchmarks that are there, that are already there to try and always better them.

“So, I was very unhappy, you may say we were relentless, but I think we were not on the cutting edge, we were not playing for a goal all the time.

“There were moments where I felt we were playing for fun, and I was very unhappy with that.”
