It’s been a season of change since goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune, 37, departed from Chiefs earlier this year, bringing an end to his long and successful career at the club.

In his absence, Chiefs have rotated between Bruce Bvuma, Brandon Petersen, and more recently, Fiacre Ntwari in goal. Despite these efforts, the club has struggled to find stability between the posts.

Speaking to Soccer Laduma, Khune lamented the current standards at Chiefs, calling the situation “heart-breaking” and pointing out the club’s historical reputation for producing elite goalkeepers.

He placed part of the blame on a lack of quality local goalkeeper coaches, arguing that foreign dominance in the position hampers development for both Chiefs and the national team.

Khune added, “You need a goalkeeper coach who is South African, who will push you to almost Ronwen’s [Williams] level… but with the current generation, there’s a big gap.”

Kick-off for the highly anticipated derby is at 3pm on Saturday at FNB Stadium.
