The stalemate on Saturday at FNB Stadium saw the Soweto giants miss a vital opportunity to secure their spot in the Top Eight of the DStv Premiership.

AmaKhosi fans were left anxious when Du Preez, the team’s leading goal scorer this season, was forced off the pitch just 29 minutes into the game. Initial fears of an ankle injury were dispelled by Johnson during the post-match press conference.

“Ja, Ash got a knock,” Johnson explained. “He couldn’t run anymore. At first, we thought it was the ankle, but it turns out it’s the toe, just above it. It might be worse than we initially thought.

“The medical team and Ash both agreed he couldn’t continue, so we brought on Happy [Mashiane].”

The potential loss of Du Preez for their final match of the season against Cape Town Spurs FC at Athlone Stadium on Saturday could be a significant blow for the Chiefs, who are in dire need of goals.

Du Preez has been a crucial player, netting six goals in all competitions, and his absence would be felt in a team struggling to find the back of the net consistently.

This season has been particularly challenging for the Chiefs. They are currently fighting to secure a Top Eight finish, marking one of their toughest campaigns in the PSL era.

With just 25 goals scored in 28 matches, they hold the record for the second-lowest scoring team in the top half of the DStv Premiership, only outscoring Polokwane City, who have 20 goals.

As Chiefs prepare for their final fixture, Johnson and his team will be hoping for positive news from the medical staff regarding Du Preez’s condition. The outcome of their last match could significantly impact their standings, making every player’s availability crucial.

Despite the difficulties, Johnson remains hopeful. “We need to assess Ash’s situation carefully. The team has shown resilience throughout the season, and we need to bring that same spirit into our last game.”
