The Belgian-Tunisian mentor confirmed to the media after guiding Chiefs to the 1-0 Betway Premiership win over Stellenbosch FC that he turned down to coach the country of his birth.

Nabi said he decided not to leave the Soweto giants after meeting with the club’s leadership.

“I would like to thank Dr Kaizer Motaung, Kaizer (Motaung) Junior, Bobby Motaung and the entire management,” Nabi said.

“I have been offered an opportunity to go and coach my country and we have sat together and decided that I will pass this big opportunity to coach my mother’s country.

“I feel that it is an honour to be here, I say thank you to everyone.”

Nabi has been with the Glamour Boys since the beginning of the season and is tasked with helping the Soweto giants reclaim their glory days.

Chiefs have gone an unprecedented nine years without silverware and will hope to avoid extending the drought to a decade by winning the Nedbank Cup or the league before the end of the season.

However, the league title looks outside their reach at the moment as they are 17 points behind log leaders Mamelodi Sundowns.

Chiefs have played two matches, compared to Sundowns, who have played 15 matches in the league and have amassed 42 points.

Nabi’s men are in the Nedbank Cup last 16 and they host Chippa United at FNB Stadium on Saturday at 18:00.
