Mamelodi Sundowns have reaffirmed their dominance in the current football season by reclaiming the top spot on the table, edging Orlando Pirates on goal difference.
Both teams have identical records with seven wins and one loss from their opening eight matches, each amassing 21 points.
Sundowns’ superior goal difference was bolstered by a commanding 3-0 victory over Sekhukhune United in their most recent outing. Meanwhile, Orlando Pirates faltered, suffering a narrow 1-0 defeat to third-placed Stellenbosch FC, allowing Sundowns to leapfrog them into the lead.
This sets up an exciting narrative for the season, with the title race appearing finely poised between these two South African football giants.
Reflecting on his side’s campaign so far, Mngqithi said in the Citizen: “Our focus at this stage is not on whether we are on top of the log or not. It’s more about looking at our cycles and whether we are achieving our targets or not.
“We’ve achieved our target in the first cycle (of five matches) and we’re close to achieving our targets in the second cycle.
“That looks positive for us because our main way of looking at this thing is to try and make sure that we respect the process and don’t get carried away.
“Sometimes there’s no need to put pressure on the team, there’s no need to panic and I think the boys are responding the way we’d love them to.”
