On Tuesday 22 March, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa announced that outdoor events are allowed to host 50% capacity with immediate effect.

The criteria are simple, people attending that event should produce proof of vaccination or negative COVID results from the last 72 hours.

Other sporting codes like rugby and cricket welcomed the decision and immediately announced 50% for the next matches. The pressure was on the PSL to follow suit and allow fans back to the stadium.

After two meetings held by PSL exco members, a decision that will make all South African soccer lovers happy was announced during a press conference on Tuesday 29 March:

It’s reported PSL stadiums will be allowed to host 50 percent capacity and the chequerboard seating plan returned as a reaction to growing COVID-19 cases.
According to Premier Soccer League chairman Dr Ivin Khoza, supporters will be allowed to return to stadiums from 8 April 2022 in the Nedbank Cup quarterfinals.

Dr Khoza did stress that this weekend’s matches will remain behind closed doors as initially planned because those matches have been categorized. Which left a lot of fans puzzled about what categorized matches mean and what’s the criteria.
