Stellenbosch FC head coach Steve Barker recently reflected on the departure of performance coach Riaan Rust, who has been pivotal in developing player performance at the club for the past five years.

Rust has now joined Pirates, following in the footsteps of Devon O’Brien, who also transitioned from Stellenbosch to the Pirates’ backroom staff.

After Stellenbosch’s 1-1 draw against TS Galaxy, Barker spoke highly of Rust, emphasising that his skills, dedication, and strong work ethic will be sorely missed.

Barker described Rust as an exceptional coach, close friend, and valued colleague, whose presence significantly impacted the team’s performance culture.

Despite the loss, Barker acknowledged that this new opportunity with the Sea Robbers is a tremendous step forward in Rust’s career.

He expressed gratitude for Rust’s contributions to Stellenbosch and optimism for the future, recognizing that such moves are a testament to the club’s staff’s growth and recognition on the broader football stage.

“I was telling the players during our farewell that just as players aspire to reach Europe or the Premier League, top staff like Ruan aim to work at the highest levels,” Barker remarked.

“In my view, Ruan is world class, capable of operating at the very peak of the game.”

Barker acknowledged Rust’s choice to accept the Pirates role, citing the importance of career advancement, especially for Rust, who recently became a father.

“This is the kind of chance he couldn’t turn down,” Barker added, wishing Rust success with his new team.

Though Rust’s departure leaves a gap, Barker shared confidence in his replacement, Rodet Yila, who joined Stellenbosch from Tottenham Hotspur.

“Rodet is highly capable and will help take our performance department forward,” Barker noted.

In a heartfelt farewell, Barker emphasized the respect and admiration the club holds for Rust. “He’s served Stellenbosch exceptionally well, and we’re all proud of the journey he’s about to begin.”
