Mamelodi Sundowns were crowned DStv Premiership champions for a record-extending fifth successive season after playing out a goalless draw against Cape Town City at the Loftus Versfeld on Wednesday.

Sundowns win DStv Premiership

Masandawana only needed a point going into the contest to wrap up the league title and they duly obliged as they won the trophy with four games of the campaign still remaining.

The league success will lift the mood at the Tshwane club after they were surprisingly dumped out of the Caf Champions League at the quarterfinal stage by Angolan side Petro de Luanda on Saturday.

The contest against the Citizens on Wednesday was a game of few clear-cut goal-scoring opportunities as Sundowns were happy to take the point on offer.

The best chance of the match fell to Masandawana’s Neo Maema, who drew a fine save from City goalkeeper Hugo Marques as early as the fifth minute.

Rushine De Reuck headed over from an Aubrey Modiba free-kick in the 12th minute while the visitors were content to sit deep and hit the hosts on the counter-attack.

It was from one such move in the first half that City broke away to fashion a goal-scoring opportunity but Darwin González blazed his effort high and wide.

The Cape team had a good chance to take the lead early in the second half when Mduduzi Mdantsane did well to create space for himself in the box but fired wide of Denis Onyango’s goal.

Modiba had a long-range shot sting the palms of Marques on the hour mark but the shot-stopper did well to tip the effort over the cross-bar.

The game died down in the final stages as the hosts kept most of the possession and City were happy to take a point back home.

It was then just the duty of the referee to blow the final whistle to signal to the Sundowns players and supporters to celebrate another trophy that is added to an impressive cabinet.
