Downs and Pirates march on

Mamelodi Sundowns stretched their lead at the top to 21 points after beating Sekhukhune United 2-0 at Loftus Versveld.

Sekhukhune United are the only side to have drawn a match against Sundowns so far in the league and were looking to upset Sundowns once again.

Peter Shalulile opened the scoring from close range in the second half with his ninth goal of the season. In-form man, Cassius Mailula netted his sixth of the season to seal the victory. The win also gave coach Rulani Mokwena his 10th straight win while Sundowns stretched their record to 14 wins in a row.

Orlando Pirates defeated bottom side side Marumo Gallants 2-0 at the Orlando Stadium in Soweto. Goals from Monnapule Saleng & a penalty from Ndlondlo ensured the Buccaneers’ scoring form continues to improve after struggling to find the net in the first half of the season.

Saleng took his tally of the season to four goals and continues to top the scoring charts at Mayfair.

Weekend to forget for KZN sides

AmaZulu & Richards Bay played into a 1-1 draw at the King Zwelithini Stadium in uMlazi on Sunday afternoon. Despite leading for the better part of the match, Romain Folz’s men couldn’t absorb pressure enough to contain the Natal Rich Boyz and their attack.

Captain Maphale netted the equalizer in stoppage time which left AmaZulu technical team furious with referee Thando Ndzandzeka for not giving a foul in the lead-up to the goal.

Maritzburg United suffered their fourth loss away from home as Chippa United claimed a 1-0 at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium. Chippa’s only goal was scored by Godspower Ighodaro in the 58th minute to take his tally of the season to six goals.

Golden Arrows were humbled 4-0 by TS Galaxy at Mbombela stadium. Arrows have suffered joint-most defeats in the league (9) this season. The Galaxy win put them level on points with Arrows.

Chiefs break Royal AM hoodoo

Royal AM suffered a 2-0 defeat at the hands of struggling Kaizer Chiefs at the New Peter Mokaba stadium in Polokwane.

AM missed plenty of chances but were not clinical enough inside the box, with main man Mfundo Thikazi wasting most of the opportunities.

Chiefs opened the scoring via a Sifiso Hlanti header from a Keagan Dolly free kick. New man Saile Bosomboli injected much-needed energy into the side and would end up giving Ashley Du Preez a tap-in opportunity to make it 2-0.
