Here’s how the match unfolded:

The game started with both teams attempting to gain an early advantage. Marumo Gallants were particularly active, creating several scoring opportunities.

Thapelo Mokobodi tested the Callies goalkeeper with a shot from outside the box in the 7th minute, which was comfortably saved.

Daniel Msendami and Kamohelo Mahlatsi missed chances from distance, showing Gallants’ intent to dominate possession and shoot from range.

Tensions rose when Tshepo Chaine of Pretoria Callies received a yellow card for a harsh challenge in the 17th minute. Siya Shai followed suit with his booking for Gallants, setting the stage for a heated contest.

Despite numerous attempts, including several from Msendami, Gallants couldn’t find the net, with shots either missing or being saved.

The second half saw an increase in intensity. After the restart, Siya Shai’s earlier caution turned into a red card, leaving Gallants with ten men.

This didn’t dampen their spirit as they continued to press forward. Marvin Sikhosana and Msendami had shots blocked or missed, but it was clear Gallants were on the front foot.

Pretoria Callies, now with a man advantage, began to push back. Saketso Moremi and Kamogelo Mogaswa had notable attempts, but these were either blocked or off target.

The match seemed headed towards extra time until a late drama unfolded.

In the 91st minute, substitute Monde Mphambaniso capitalized on a close-range opportunity, giving Gallants the lead with a precise left-footed shot into the bottom left corner.

Despite a flurry of late chances from both sides, including a header by Callies’ Sibongakonke Mgwaba going over, the scoreline remained 1-0.

Marumo Gallants held on for the victory, with Mphambaniso becoming the hero of the night. The match was a testament to the fighting spirit of both teams, but it was Gallants who advanced to the next round of the Nedbank Cup.
