With reports strongly linking former Mamelodi Sundowns and Wydad Casablanca coach Rulani Mokwena with a return to Pirates, speculation is rife around who will take up the coaching role at the Soweto Giants.

But Lekgwathi, one of the most respected figures in the club’s history, believes the focus must shift from speculation to support.

“It’s not about names, it’s about results. Whether it’s Rulani or someone else, what matters is that the coach can elevate the team and deliver the consistency we’ve been lacking in the league,” the former Bucs captain told iDiski Times.

Under Riveiro, Pirates found cup success – lifting five domestic trophies – and made it to the CAF Champions League semi-finals despite doubts upon his arrival.

Despite cup success, Sundowns maintained an iron grip on league proceedings once again wrapping up the PSL title with plenty of time to spare in 2024/25. And while cup success is fantastic, Pirates fans are desperate to end their league drought.

“For us, the challenge is the league. We’ve done well in cups and Africa, now we need a coach who can bring the same intensity to the Premiership. We have to be title contenders every season,” he added.

“They called him a plumber. But that plumber made history. That’s why we have to back whoever comes in. Even if it’s another ‘plumber’ or ‘carpenter’, what matters is results. Let’s give him time and support.”
