The PGA Championship

The Ocean Course at Kiawah Island Golf Resort is severely exposed and hugs the Atlantic Ocean, providing stunning views of the Kiawah coastline.

Rory McIlroy is the betting favourite this week following his 3rd victory at Quail Hollow. Yes, he did win this event on this very course by a record eight strokes. But the soft, receptive conditions suited him to the bone in 2012. Whether he’s any value at 11/1 outright this time around is debatable.

Jon Rahm has been consistent this season without any of the pyrotechnics that saw him duelling with Dustin Johnson last year (Dustin Johnson looks quite appealing at 18/1). Players Champion Justin Thomas will be a factor while Viktor Hovland is starting to emerge as a real Major threat.

But perhaps the most enthralling subplot belongs to Jordan Spieth. The Texan has played some brilliant golf this year and he is looking to seal the career Grand Slam at the age of 27. The former Open Champion has proven to be a links maestro and he could very well be in contention this week. And let’s not forget defending champion Collin Morikawa, who’s currently trading at an inviting 33/1.

French Open

There’s not long to go now either until tennis aficionados spend two weeks glued to their screens watching the world’s best tennis players battle it out on the sticky stuff.

In the men’s draw, it appears as though power has started to shift from the Federer-Nadal-Djokovic triumvirate that dominated the sport for such a long time. Of course, the abovementioned Spaniard is still the King of Clay, and rightly so. Only Dominic Thiem and the other two members of the three-headed beast have stopped Nadal from winning this tournament since 2005.

The likes of Stefanos Tsitsipas, Daniil Medvedev, and Alexander Zverev may also have a say before the tournament is through.

On the women’s side of the draw, things are far less certain. Reigning French Open champion, Iga Swiatek tops the betting boards. The Polish teenager romped to a staggering 6-0, 6-0 win over Karolína Plíšková in the Italian Open also accounting for the likes of Coco Gauff and Elina Svitolina.

Keep an eye on Naomi Osaka who has yet to really impose herself on clay while Serena Williams – although not at her mercurial best – always finds a lot of betting support.

UEFA Champions League Final

For the second time in three seasons, the final of Europe’s premier club competition will be contested between two English clubs. Manchester City are obvious favourites heading into the tie. Under Pep Guardiola, the Citizens have been one of the most dominant forces in European football for the last few years. And having won absolutely everything except for old Big Ears, you best believe that the new Premier League Champions will head into this game 100% focussed on the task at hand.

Chelsea, still smarting from their 1-0 FA Cup final defeat at the hands of Leicester, have come on in leaps and bounds under the tutelage of Thomas Tuchel. The German tactician has shored up their leaky defence and has started to get the best out of the likes of Hakim Ziyech and Kai Havertz, but has not found a solution to Timo Werner’s form falling off of a cliff. They won this tournament back in 2012 against Bayern Munich, but you feel that this City outfit should prove a bridge too far for the Londoners.

Daily News 2000

One of the premier events of KZN’s Champions Season, the Daily News 2000 is only won by top quality horses. The names roll off of the tongue: Hawwaam, French Navy, Legislate, Vercingetorix, Big City Life.

Linebacker currently sits atop the betting boards following his WSB Guineas win and prior win in the Jonsson Workwear Cape Derby.

Kommetdieding, meanwhile, has his first crack at the distance but has tasted victory over 1800 meters in the Grade 3 Politician Stakes. The story of this colt really is a heart-warming one. Purchased for just R55 000, this Michelle Rix/Harold Crawford trained runner could go onto big things after this race.
