Weekend Highlights

Sundowns Claim Shell Helix Ultra Cup

The inaugural Shell Helix Ultra Cup crowned Sundowns champions on Saturday the 21st of July. Jeremy Brockie finally scored his first goal in the yellow shirt as he netted Masawanda’s first goal in the 52nd minute. Sundowns got their second in injury time when Themba Zwane curled the ball into the top right corner before Chefs scored a consolation from a Bernard Parker header.
Final score: Sundowns 2 -1 Chiefs.
Blitzbokke Claim World Cup Bronze
The South African men’s team finished third in the 2018 Sevens Rugby World Cup to secure the bronze medal as they saw off Olympic champions Fiji 24 – 19. After a strong performance in the early rounds, the South Africans were not able to beat England in the semi-final as they went down 29 – 7.

The Blitzbokke are yet to win a World Cup although they have won HSBC World Sevens Series titles – the last time the South African’s reached a Sevens Rugby World Cup final was in 1997 where they lost to Fiji.

Lewis Hamilton Regains Championship Lead
After a hydraulics problem during the qualifying stage of the German Grand Prix saw the Brit start in 15th position, Hamilton drove a masterful race to claim the German Grand Prix title.

After the 17th lap Hamilton had moved up to fifth before Sebastian Vettel veered off a turn and crashed out late on after leading for the majority of the race. For the first time in Germany, Mercedes finished in a one – two as Hamilton and the German team regained top spots in the Drivers’ and Constructors’ Championship standings.

Dortmund top International Champions Cup after Round 1
The first round of the International Champions Cup saw Dortmund claim victories over Man City (1- 0) and Liverpool (3-1). While Bayern Munich saw off a star-less PSG 3 – 1 that fielded veteran Gianluigi Buffon in goal.

Thursday the 26th of July will see six fixtures take place:

  • Juventus v Bayern Munich
  • Dortmund v Benfica
  • Man City v Liverpool
  • AS Roma v Tottenham
  • AC Milan v Man United
  • Atl Madrid v Arsenal

Sri Lanka seal Test Series

Sri Lanka claimed a 2 – 0 Test series win over the Proteas after a convincing 199-run victory in Colombo. Theunis de Bruyn scored his maiden century after a valiant effort in harsh batting conditions against the Sri Lankan spinners. De Bruyn was bowled out for 101 from 232 balls. Themba Bavuma salvaged some respect to the SA batting innings with his 63 from 98 balls. The pair’s sixth-wickett partnership of 123  was not enough to avert an inevitable series defeat. The teams will now regroup for a five match ODI starting on Sunday the 29th of July.
