Mercedes are in with a shout of taking the 2020 Constructors Championship with five rounds to spare but they’d need a lot to go their way this weekend in Portugal. The scenario that would see Mercedes claim the title would be if they managed a one-two finish and Red Bull failed to garner a points haul of over three points. This is a highly unlikely scenario, however, as both red Bulls drivers should be in the points this Saturday out at the Algarve International Circuit.

Previous Race

It was a welcome return to the Nurnburg track for Lewis Hamilton as the ‘Brit racked up his seventh win of the campaign as he brought his car in ahead of Red Bull main man Max Verstappen, who claimed a respectable second-place finish. It was a rather good day for those associated with Red Bull, actually, as their old boy Daniel Ricciardo managed to claim third spot on the podium.

Racing point enjoyed a fruitful old afternoon at the Nurburgring as Sergio Perez claimed fourth place and Nico Hulkenburg took eighth. Sandwiched between the duo were Carlos Sainz (fifth) Pierre Gasly (sixth) and Charles LeClerc (seventh), while the top ten was rounded out by Romain Grosjean (ninth) and Antonio Giovanazzi.

Track
After 24 years, the Portuguese Grand Prix makes a return to the F1 circuit. The race was a fixture on the F1 circuit during the ’80s and early ’90s with Williams being the real dominant force out in Portugal.

We have a new venue for this weekend with the ALgrave International Circuit set to welcome the F1 field for the first time – previous Portuguese Grand Prix were held at the Estoril Circuit, the Monsanto Circuit and the Boavista Circuit.

The Algarve International Circuit has a lap distance of 4.653 kilometres, with each lap featuring 15 turns. The circuit looks rather challenging on a paper with a number of tight turns and sequences.

There’s a long old start-finish line that leads into the Primera turn that runs onto a hairpin called Lagos. A number of drivers could well be caught out here especially if we get the rainfall that is currently being predicted for Sunday.

Value Bet

Fastes in Practice 1 – Sergio Perez @ 20/1

I’m having a massive speculator this week backing Sergio Perez to get the better of the two Mercedes and the Red Bulls in Practice 1. My thinking is that the Silver Arrows duo may take it a bit easy as they’re not too familair with the track. If this happens, then Perez may be in with a shout of netting us a handsome return for a small outlay.

Lewis Hamilton @4/10

There’s not much value here but with little track data the only play for me is to back Hamilton, who has won seven of the ten Grand Prix raced this season. A cheecky bet on one of the bigger priced names like Daniel Ricciardo might also be worth a shout.
