A disgruntled Gavin Hunt has lamented his SuperSport United side’s defensive crisis ahead of a Nedbank Cup Round of 32 clash against Cape Town City on Tuesday.

SuperSport have defenders Ime Okon and Keegan Allan suspended, while Thulani Hlatshwayo is injured, leaving Siyanda Xulu as the only recognised centre-back available.

Hunt has had to call on Bilal Baloyi from the DStv Diski side to fill the void. Baloyi has made just four senior appearances and is set to partner Xulu at the heart of the Matsatsantsa defence.

Despite their injury concerns, Hunt’s side have won their last three successive matches. City meanwhile, have lost just one in their last ten matches.

However, SuperSport have won four of the last five meetings between the two sides.

“We’ve run out of the centre-backs, with all of them injured or suspended,” Hunt said.

“So that area of the field has been tough for us, and it’s no coincidence we are third [in the league] when we should be six or eight points clear of second place.

“It’s because we struggled in that department. We can’t keep bodies on the field in that area. It has been a major concern.”

City and SuperSport are in second and third place in the DStv Premiership, with both on 30 points.
