Race 3: ALGHADEER(12)
Delta Airlines 2200 - Grade: 3 - Race Distance: 2200 Meters (Turf)

Jockey: Anthony DELPECH - Trainer: Mike de KOCK

There should be a decent pace in this July consolation handicap and the formline to follow could be the Balance Sheet run on 28/05. The tough as nails gelding ALGHADEER was having his third start inside eleven days on that occasion but he still only tired very late after setting his own fractions. He is only 1kg better off with the rather unlucky runner-up of that event, HELDERBERG BLUE but this is slightly shorter trip could make a massive difference. Furthermore, there are a few pacesetters present and the Mike de Kock charge may not have to do the ‘donkey work’. He captured a feature in this province with Delpech at the saddle.

Race 5: MALEFICENT(9)
Golden Slipper - Grade: 2 - Race Distance: 1400 Meters (Turf)
Jockey: Weicho MARWING - Trainer: Alec LAIRD

MALEFICENT has blossomed magnificently with each outing and a few nervous moments, she put her super-stride together to demolish a quality local field in a feature over this c & d, three weeks ago. That first experience of this circuit would have brought her on considerably and the Alec Laird inmate appears to be heading straight for the tops. She is ready to make this step-up in grade and the bay filly is once again the one to beat. Her good draw is a huge asset and she must be followed with confidence. It could be a great day for this family as her full-brother Rocketball is a lively contender in the ‘big one’.

Race 6: UNAGI(13)
Durban Golden Horseshoe - Grade: 2 - Race Distance: 1400 Meters (Turf)
Jockey: Andrew FORTUNE - Trainer: Gary ALEXANDER

The Gauteng-based outfit of trainer Gary Alexander raided with huge success at this venue recently and that form could continue with their solitary entrant on this car, UNAGI. This fast improving son of Admire Main showed his blistering turn of foot as he bludgeoned some hard-knocking handicappers over a mile on his handicap debut on the Highveld, six weeks ago. He was withdrawn due to being off feed when carded to race on Youth Day but his conditioner is obviously pleased with his progress since. The chestnut colt should enjoy racing on this circuit and he could be ready for this huge step-up in class. His good draw and top veteran jockey Fortune are major assets in his hat-trick attempt.

UNAGI(13)

Race 7: ROCKETBALL(10)

Vodacom Durban July - Grade: 1 - Race Distance: 2200 Meters (Turf)
Jockey: Warren KENNEDY - Trainer: Gavin VAN ZYL

The usual three-year-olds vs older rivals debate would have dominated headlines leading up to the country's most prestigious race but there are a few other interesting factors to consider. Firstly, there isn't a natural pacesetter and all barring one of the younger generation are under sufferance due to the revision in weights. All that said, still the young guns, and in particular KZN's hopeful ROCKETBALL could land a major upset. The Gavin van Zyl inmate proved his class with a brilliant effort behind Triple Crown victor ABASHIRI (3.5kgs worse off) in the Derby at his penultimate attempt and his jockey would have learnt plenty about him from his strong late finish in the Daily News 2000 behind RABADA. The son of Judpot is arguably the only entrant in this field that is versatile in terms of his tactics but he was probably further back than his jockey wanted to be over ten furlongs last time out. Like many others, he made eye-catching late headway over the final furlong but rest assured his pilot will have him handier from a fair draw today.

Race 10: HEAPS OF FUN(12)

Garden Province Stakes - Grade: 1 - Race Distance: 1600 Meters (Turf)

Jockey: S'manga KHUMALO - Trainer: Sean TARRYAs expected there are some top class fillies and mares on display in this Grade 1 contest over the mile and a thrilling finish could be on the cards. The narrow first verdict goes to the three-year-old filly HEAPS OF FUN from the powerful yard of champion trainer Sean Tarry. The daughter of Visionaire showed her class when she easily held off fellow three-year-old NEGROAMARO to win the Gauteng Fillies Guineas in February. She overcame a shocking subsequent run in the Classic with two smart recent runs, the latter of which was a staying on 4th in a Grade 1 over ten furlongs. The chestnut filly is very effective from or near the front and the drop to the mile should be no issue. She will be severely tested by the older guard but could be equal to the task at hand.

Race 11: CAPTAIN CHAOS(5)
Tab Gold Sprint - Grade: Non-Black - Race Distance: 1200 Meters (Poly)
Jockey: Keagan DE MELO - Trainer: Mark DIXON

The former Cape resident CAPTAIN CHAOS was always touted a champion by his previous conditioner and his flawless victory on his ploytrack debut showed exactly why. The son of Captain Al wore blinkers for the first time in his career and easily accounted for PYSCHO SYD over the c & d. That victory earned him a seven-pound penalty but he certainly has more to offer, particularly on this surface and the headgear remains on. He is his yard’s only entrant on the card.

VALUE BET (EACH WAY) FOR TODAY:
Race 4: KING OF PAIN(1)
SABC Gold Vase - Grade: 3 - Race Distance: 3000 Meters (Turf)
Jockey: Bernard FAYD'HERBE - Trainer: Joey RAMSDEN

In stark contrast to the previous staying feature, this marathon event could be run at a sedate gallop and that will suit the striking grey gelding, KING OF PAIN. The top weight showed his class when lead- ing throughout to easily beat THREE BALLOONS (0.5kg worse off) in a Cape feature over two miles in his penultimate run. He then caught the eye with a decent comeback run in Grade 2 company over shorter six weeks ago and the Joey Ramsden inmate will strip much fitter now. He has enjoyed plenty of success with this top heavyweight jockey and is the one to beat.
