Mendieta took the DStv Premiership by storm after joining Stellies, scoring ten goals and providing nine assists in 31 matches.

The 30-year-old is now being linked with Sundowns, Kaizer Chiefs and SuperSport United but the champions are reportedly winning the race.

The Brazilians have kept quiet over links with Mendieta, but Chiefs have been more candid with sporting director Kaizer Motaung Jr admitting he is a target along with Cape Town City FC forward Khanyisa Mayo.

“Of course, Mendieta is down to Stellenbosch’s strategic outlook for him. We know he is contracted, and I think as time goes on, we will see where we are. He is a top talent,” Motaung told Radio 2000.

“We would like to have him, and we would like to have (Khanyisa Mayo) all these are great players.

“Our supporters mentioning their names shows they understand the game, but the coach and his staff will give us an indication of their requirements.”

In the meantime, Mendieta has paid tribute to Stellies on the eve of his departure.

“I am respectfully addressing you to thank you for the opportunity and the love that you have given me all these years,” he said on Twitter.

“I think I have done my job very well and I have always given my best and that leaves me at ease.

“I will always carry Stellenbosch in my heart and be grateful for all the love and affection they gave me and my family. Greetings and thank you.”
