Orlando Pirates midfielder Patrick Maswanganyi has revealed the intriguing tale behind his unexpected transition from SuperSport United, a move that unfolded quietly, far from the media spotlight.

The 25-year-old midfield sensation embarked on his debut season in the DStv Premiership with SuperSport United in January, concluding a four-year spell in Portugal, where he plied his trade with Oliveirense and Académica U23s.

Maswanganyi’s skills came to the fore under the guidance of coach Gavin Hunt, with his ball control and knack for creating goal-scoring opportunities in a system that prioritized defensive solidity. Hunt was seeking stability in his inaugural season back at the club, and Maswanganyi’s contributions were pivotal.

In 23 appearances, he notched up four assists, catching the attention of Mamelodi Sundowns, who were reportedly monitoring his progress. However, SuperSport United was determined to retain his services for the upcoming season.

Yet, to the astonishment of many, Orlando Pirates unveiled him as one of their four marquee signings just last month. Maswanganyi made an immediate impact during their pre-season stint in Spain, where he notched three goals and secured a spot in the starting line-up for the 2023/24 season under the tutelage of Jose Riveiro.

“I always dreamt of being here, but I never anticipated it would materialize this swiftly,” Maswanganyi remarked during an interview with iDiski Times. “I was oblivious to the move until the last minute when I was informed that I had to join here, and I was absolutely thrilled!

“My agent, Steve Kapeluschnik, phoned me in the morning and asked for my thoughts on Pirates. I told him I wanted to be a part of it. He advised me to ponder it over, which I did for two days. First, I called my mom, and then I reached out to Arnold Ranokoko.”

When questioned by iDiski Times about his abrupt departure from SuperSport United, where he had emerged as a pivotal player in just six months, he offered a candid explanation.

“I aspired to join a bigger club, and I believe being here will immensely enhance my game. It aligns with my style of play and offers an opportunity for me to learn and grow. They possess an exceptional pool of talent, and I yearned to be part of a team with intense competition. Back home, my grandmother and grandfather are die-hard Orlando Pirates fans, so this move is dedicated to them.”

Maswanganyi has now featured in all four opening games of the season for Pirates, registering two assists thus far, affirming that his transition to the Buccaneers has been nothing short of a dream come true.
