Despite an intense battle over two legs resulting in a goalless deadlock, the fate of the tie was sealed by a penalty shootout, with Sundowns advancing, aided by an outstanding performance from goalkeeper Ronwen Williams.

The pivotal moment came when Stephane Aziz Ki unleashed a stunning strike that appeared to cross the line after hitting the underside of the bar. However, VAR intervened, ultimately denying Young Africans the goal.

“It’s impossible to fight against VAR. I find it extremely unjust what unfolded here,” Gamondi expressed his discontent in an interview with SABC Sport. “Even Aziz Ki himself assured me, ‘Coach, it was a goal.’ But to be knocked out due to a decision like that…”

Gamondi’s frustration stemmed from past encounters, recalling a similar incident during his time with Agadir against Zamalek. “When facing such formidable opponents, these injustices are disheartening, but unfortunately, it’s part of the game,” he lamented.

Despite the setback, Gamondi commended his players for their resilience. “My players fought valiantly. In my opinion, they deserved more, especially considering the chances we created compared to Sundowns,” he remarked.

However, Gamondi questioned the necessity of VAR intervention for teams like Sundowns. “Big teams like them don’t require VAR’s assistance. It’s a disappointment,” he voiced his concern, echoing the sentiments of Young Africans’ supporters.

Reflecting on the journey, Gamondi expressed pride in his team’s performance against formidable opponents like Al Ahly and Sundowns, despite missing key players. Yet, his pride was overshadowed by disappointment in the refereeing decisions.

The controversial VAR decision left Young Africans and their supporters disheartened, raising questions about the fairness of such technology in crucial matches.
