Race 6

There are four unraced runners in the field, so as is always the case in these types of races, a keen eye should be kept on the betting markets to get some indication as to whether any of the connections believe that they can win first-time out. Any betting support for a runner or runners should be respected. Of the raced runners, RUM DIARY may well prove to be the best. He finished second on debut over five furlongs and then third next time out over 1100M, 1.7L behind the winner, but he was carried wide from the 600M mark in that event. The gelding returns from a 19-week rest, but has had the benefit of two barrier trials. From gate five, he looks to be the one to side with here.

ZAMBEZI RIVER has a handy draw two and tried to go from gun to tape when ending up in fourth place last time out over five furlongs, but he was reported to have bled that day, so a line should be drawn through that effort. He returns here after a 56-week spell but has had three barrier trials, winning the latest and the fact that his connections have brought him back into racing after such a lengthy absence would seem to suggest that they believe that he still has something more to offer them.

CANDY WOMEN is a 3-year-old filly taking on the boys, but she was returning from a 17-week rest and having her first run for her new trainer when finishing third last time out over five furlongs, 4.8L back from the winner. She raced wide throughout in that event and would have come on further with that run under her belt and the form of that race has stood up well with two runners out of that contest subsequently winning. She faces a wide draw ten, but she should not be lightly overlooked.

Race 7

TIME BANDIT is a 3-year-old filly taking on males and missed out on her hat-trick after two victories over five furlongs when finishing third last time out when stepping up to six furlongs, 1.2L off the winner. She jumped awkwardly that day, bumping another runner, but battled all the way down to the wire. The filly has cracked pole position and is made the value bet on the day’s card.

CASSIEL was slow away but struck the front at the 150m mark before holding off all the late challengers in the dash down to the wire to win on debut over five furlongs by a half-length. He would have learnt from that experience and with the natural improvement that can be expected and with non-claiming apprentice, Zac Lloyd, son of ex-SA champion jockey, Jeff Lloyd in the irons, he should be right up there when they hit the line. His draw two will do him no harm.

SLINKY is the stable companion of the top choice and another 3-year-old filly in the race. She showed plenty of toe to win her maiden race over six furlongs by two lengths at the third time of asking. She in turn is drawn one outside the latter and makes a solid back-up for the yard.

Race 8

A 3-year-old filly and a 6-year-old mare could fight out the finish to this race and complete the exacta, but the day’s best bet, CROSS YOUR HEART is taken to lead the field home. She goes for her hat-trick after victories over 1100M and the latest over six furlongs by 0.8L, but it should be noted that she came three wide into the home straight, before finishing the best, so that effort was encouraging. The filly has a useful draw four and will have 2kgs taken off her back thanks to her claiming apprentice and could prove hard to topple.

SUPRINA has consistent formlines to her name, finishing second in her last two outings and tried to go from jump to wire in the latest over six furlongs, ending up 0.8L behind the winner. She has pulled pole position and is likely to attempt similar front-running tactics today.

DISNECK won over 1100M three runs back, finished eighth in his penultimate start over five furlongs and then sixth in his latest outing over the same sprint trip, three lengths behind the winner, but he had to be held up at the top of the home straight on that occasion, before making good late progress over the latter stages. The gelding faces a wide draw eleven, but on the plus side he will have 3kgs removed from his allocated weight courtesy of his claiming apprentice.

Race 9

DRACO’S FIRE had his consistency rewarded with a 2.3L victory last time out over 1500M, at the third time of asking. He went from gun to tape that day and from gate five and with Zac Lloyd in the saddle, he will be hoping to notch up a quick double.

LUSKAIRE followed up his penultimate run victory over seven furlongs with a fifth-place finish next time out over the same journey, 6.8L adrift of the winner, but he jumped awkwardly that day and then came the widest of them all into the home stretch. His jockey also reported that he did not act in the going, so that effort is best ignored. The gelding is sure to put his [ole position to good use.

HIGHBORN HARRY is trained by ex-SA jockey/trainer David Payne and has turned in two solid last runs, the latest when third over a mile, just over a length behind the winner, but he did jump awkwardly bumping another runner that day, before staying on well over the latter stages The form of that race has been franked and whilst drawn wideish in gate eight, he should be included in all bets.
